MOTM-120 Sub-Octave Multiplier

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction
"The MOTM-120 is a Synthesis Technology exclusive design. Based on an article in Electronotes, we have updated, improved, and added features to create a truly unique module.

The MOTM-120 contains two 4-stage sub-octave dividers, a digital MUX, and 4 digital ring modulators. It operates in one of two modes, selected by the cleverly named MODE switch.

In the simplest operation (MODE is set to SUB), a single input is fed into the A IN jack. The signal passes through a level comparator, whose lower threshold is 80mv pk-pk. When the input exceeds this, a 4-bit binary counter is clocked with the input signal. This generates the lower 4 sub-octaves. These are then mixed by 4 individual pots along with the input signal. A switch selects either the original source mixed in, OR the "squared" version of the input.

The additional 4 sub-octaves (similar to pulling out lower octave drawbars on a Hammond) greatly fatten up the bottom end of any signal. Even a simple sine or triangle will punch through in the mix.

Lots of synths have a single sub-octave, but we give you FOUR!

But the real fun starts when you flip the MODE switch to CROSS. In this mode, 2 input signals are required. Each is divided into their respective 4 sub-octaves, then each sub-octave is ring modulated with each other! Since we are in the digital domain, it's easy to ring modulate (you'll have to buy one to see how we did it!). These results are simply awesome and bizarre. If A IN is audio, but B IN is from a LFO, what you hear is a 16-cycle pattern of the sub-octaves getting multiplexed in. As the B IN signal is raised into audio frequencies, the results are HUGE chordal timbres with lively beat frequencies. Electronotes used to describe this as Waveform Animation, and that's a pretty accurate description.

The MOTM-120 is a powerful addition to your studio. The wimpiest digital synth can be turned into a growling monster!"

MOTM-300 synthesizer module

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction
"MOTM-300: Ultra Voltage Controlled Oscillator The foundation of any synthesizer lies in it’s VCOs, and here again is where the MOTM system rises above the old and new modulars. The MOTM-300 Ultra VCO is the most accurate and stable analog VCO ever designed for music synthesizers. Previous VCOs used 1 or 2 simple temperature stabilization loops, or expensive heat-generating “ovens” to keep the pitch from drifting. The MOTM-300 uses five separate temperature compensation loops, which keeps the pitch accuracy within 1Hz over the entire musical scale! The average 24 hour drift is less than 0.4Hz at 8Khz, which is less than 0.005%. No other VCO comes remotely close to this drift stability. How is this done? Several ways: careful selection of components is a major factor. Attention to design is coupled with absolutely the best parts, such as military-spec summing resistors (0.1% tolerance at 20ppm drift) and state-of-the-art ultra-low drift op amps. The PC board uses controlled impedance, balanced-pair traces and a low capacitance ground plane. These and many other design details make the MOTM-300 the new standard for modular VCOs. The front panel pots are all cermet, sealed construction for reduced temperature drift. Temperature stability is just one area where the MOTM-300 stands out. Other features include 3 CV inputs (1 fixed at 1V/Octave, the other two can allow up to 1.75 Octaves/Volt scales), Linear FM, PWM, and Hard and Soft Sync. All 4 waveforms are available simultaneously at full 10V peak-to-peak levels. The MOTM-300 is our most difficult kit to assemble. It is NOT for a beginner. But, like all other kits, we have a 100% satisfaction, 30 day return policy. If you have questions about the skill level required, please call us! SIZE: 3.470 inches x 8.720 inches. Mounting holes are 3.0 inches by 8.250 inches (standard rack spacing). #8-32 hardware. Depth behind panel is 4.5 inches. PANEL CONTROLS: Coarse and Fine Initial pitch, FM1 and FM2 attenuators, Initial Pulse Width, Pulse Width Modulation attenuator Switches: FM1 Linear/Exponential response, AC/DC coupling, Hard/Soft Sync JACKS: Sync I/O, 1V/Oct in, FM1 in, FM2 in, Sine, Tri, Saw and Pulse outputs LEVELS: Audio voltages 10V pk-pk, control voltage –7V to +7V; Sync I/O is a 2uS pulse 0-+5V (active high) POWER: +-15VDC at 45ma max. MOTM-190

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via these auctions
"Here’s the official description: MOTM-190: μμμμVCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier)/Ring Modulator Kit difficulty – 2/5 The MOTM-190 is a dual VCA and Ring Modulator in a compact 1U size. The modules contain 2 independent VCAs. VCA#1 can be configured as a VCA or Ring Modulator (RM) by a switch. The top BLEND control acts as either an initial gan setting (VCA mode) or as RM depth (RM mode). In RM mode, the BLEND control mimics the function of the RING lever on a CS-80. The second VCA can operate in Linear or Exponential response. The two panel controls are for initial gain (from 0 to 1) and for CV attenuation. Using an all-discrete design with no “special” chips, the MOTM-190 offers low noise, high dynamic range and “CD quality” sound for a low size and price. SIZE: 1.735 inches x 8.720 inches. Mounting holes are 1.5 inches by 8.250 inches (standard rack spacing). #8-32 mounting bolts included. Depth behind panel is 3.0 inches. PANEL CONTROLS: VCA#1: BLEND and VCA/RM mode switch. VCA #2: Linear/Exponential mode switch, initial GAIN, CV MODulation. JACKS: CV IN, audio IN, and audio OUT (both sections). SIGNAL LEVELS: VCA: CV 0 - 5V, Audio In/Out 10V peak-to-peak (+/-5v) CONTROL LEVELS: 0 to +5V for unity gain. IMPEDANCES: 50k minimum input / 1k output typical POWER: +/-15VDC at 15ma max. MOTM SN76477 SUPER CONTROLLER MODULE

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction
"in MOTM Form Factor. Original PCB design is from THOMAS HENRY
It utilizes the SN76477 to build a versatile CV source unit:
- one gated/delayed LFO (with hold function!) providing triangle and square, trigger and gate outputs.
- one noise source with selectable frequency range and sweep
- one sample & hold with portamento and attenuation

short description:
there is the LFO section. you will choose mode of operation with a switch selecting delay, gate or switch. in delay mode the LFO will start when triggered depending on the delay time - so you can create delayed modulation. in gate mode the lfo is alway on until you plug a cord in (switching jack socket). from now on the LFO is on when a gate signal is present. in switch mode you can perform a "hold". the LFO stops as soon as you close the connected (foot?)switch. a status LED above the mode selector indicates the LFO working. there is a selector for the LFO range, a rate control and a LED indicating the speed of the LFO. there are four outputs: triangle and square wave, the gate and the trigger outputs a derived from the LFO. the gate is derived from the square wave output but going from 0V to approx 10V (or whatever, depending on a resistor value). the trigger is derived from the triangle and delivers a 1ms pulse. don't forget: the output is gateable or controlled by delay or switch!

the S/H section :the S/H is clocked from the LFO trigger and provides a portamento (lag) and depth control.

the noise section: the frequency range of the noise source is selectable by a switch. furthermore there is a filter control (known from the SN voice) and a attenuated cv in for the sweep, which base is set by the initial control. you can select external or internal (LFO) sweep modulation."

"The delay time is variable from about 33mSec to 300mSec by varying a resistance. The datasheet specs a maximum 300mSec delay at 1% distortion, but we found it could go to about 2 seconds with acceptable results.

They implemented voltage control by using an LDR (yellow LED and CDS photoresistor) for the resistive element. A true vactrol could also be used. They want the resitance to vary from as low as possible (for short delays) up to about 100K. Some experimentation will have to be done with the driving current levels for the LED."

"This is an MOTM-format kit for a Catgirl Synth Cynare Analog Drum Synth module. I bought it recently from Scott Deyo at Bridechamber.com and everything you need to build the module is here aside from the wire and the skills and tools to build it. From what he said this is the last of the original run aside from one other one which he was going to keep for himself so in a way this is a rarity. An audio sample can be found at the web site."
