"Yamaha CS 30 synthesizer. This the flagship of the CS series- 2 VCOs, 2 VCFs, 2 VCAs, 3 EGs ( 2 with reversible polarity), 8 step Analog Sequencer and a sweepable LFO- DANG!!! Very flexible signal path. Looks and sounds excellent."

It also uses Phase Distortion (PD) synthesis so it is quite capable of some cool digital/ analog sounds! PD is Casio's own take on digital synthesis from the mid-eighties and is found in all of their CZ series. You basically modify digital waveforms (sine waves) to create various sounds. It can create wild new sounds, notably percussive sounds strings and brass."
via this auction "This is the same engine as the EMU SP1200, but with a lot more features. The best thing about the Emax 1 is the lo-fi 12-bit engine, thick 8 analog low pass filters, and 8 individual outputs. NIN's first album was made with an Emax 1. You can hear it right away when adjusting the resonance of the filters. This Emax 1 isn't the most pretty unit we've seen, but it does work like a champ. With these legacy Emu samplers it seems to be once you get a good one than you are ready to go. But if you get a bad one with a bunch of issues, it turns into a science project trying to get the working again. But this Emax 1 is loading samples, saving, and playing fine."
